On behalf of the New Hope Church of God In Christ family, I welcome you with loving kindness into the ministry. It is our prayer that you embrace this ministry with the love and passion that we have obtained over the years.

As time progresses, you will come to understand the focus of this ministry in which God has blessed us to “Go, and Help.” This prophetic word of “Go and help and I will bless you,” was placed upon the church many years ago. From that time on, New Hope has focused on giving a helping hand to many of our brothers in need financially and most important, spiritually.

Our ministry is multi-faceted and we touch in all areas of life and ministry work. Amongst our most frequented ministry is the Tent Ministry. Several months out of the year, we work in the Tent Ministry, going into neighborhoods deemed “high-crime” areas, and minister the word of God unto them, informing many lost souls that there is hope. This anointed ministry God has given us the charge to carry out has touched thousands of lives.

Known to many as, “the church on wheels,” New Hope is constantly on the road assisting other ministries. There is no place too far that we won’t venture under the leadership of the Holy Ghost to aid others in need. It is an unusual life to get accustomed to, but once you embrace the charge that God placed on this ministry, there is no limit to what you will be willing to sacrifice for His namesake.

Once again I welcome you and yours to the family and I open my doors to you for any concerns or questions that you may have. Enclosed you will find a few items that will assist you with learning more about the Church o f God In Christ, Inc., the governing body of our church, founded by Bishop C.H. Mason.

Meet the Pastor

Frank L. Smith, Sr. has served as the pastor of New Hope Church of God In Christ for 31 years. In its inception, 34 years ago, New Hope was founded by the late James H. Gatlin, Jr. Upon his death, the Lord revealed to the late Bishop David C. Love to appoint Deacon Frank L. Smith as the next pastor of New Hope Church of God In Christ. A diligent but humble servant of the Lord, Elder Smith was reluctant to take the position of pastor of New Hope, but the Lord revealed to him that he was the type of man that he could use as a vital spiritual tool. Early on, as he took leadership over this ministry, the Lord revealed to him the ultimate mission of New Hope, “Go and help and I will bless you.” Since receiving that divine instruction, there is no place too far or near that Elder Smith and the New Hope Church of God In Christ will travel to for fellowship, evangelizing, and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. Elder Smith’'s love and passion for evangelizing does n’ot go unnoticed. He currently serves as the President of the State Evangelistic Team in the 1st Jurisdiction of Virginia were Bishop Ted Thomas, Sr. is the prelate. Taking this position very seriously, Elder Smith travels throughout the Jurisdiction helping other ministries to capture the spirit of evangelism and spread the gospel. Not being a biased man, Elder Smith takes the ministry beyond the 1st Jurisdiction of Virginia. Annually he travels with the church through out the United States to bring hope to the broken hearted. From one tip of the West Coast, Washington State, to the tip of the East Coast, Florida, Elder Smith has taken the spirit of evangelism all those places in between. Often times, he travels with his signature trademark, the green and orange tent that is a drawing card for the New Hope Outreach ministry. He was married to Geraldine Elizabeth Gatlin Smith. Since 1950 their relationship as husband and wife served as a tool for the up building of the ministry. They travel the United States together preaching and teaching the word of God, helping people to be delivered from all manner of sickness and disease, being a witness to the workings of the Holy Ghost. From their union, birth six children: Gwendolyn Bell; Sharon Felton; Frank Jr. (deceased); Elvis Sr.; Carlton; and Darlene Echols; and all of them are saved and diligently working in the church. Elder Smith is a simple man. As he will tell you, “he is just a farm boy.” No fancy degrees and letters are attached to the end of his name. His accreditation comes from being saved, baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost. That alone has made room for him and has gained him favor in the sight of men. He is a pillar of his community with a reputation that has earned him much respect.Under the leadership of Elder Frank L. Smith, Sr., pastor of New Hope Church of God In Christ, the flame of evangelism will continue to burn in the souls of each life this ministry has touched.

District Missionary Geraldine Smith

After a life of serving in the Lords army as a dutiful and committed soldier, Geraldine Elizabeth Gatlin Smith went on to be with her Lord and Savior on December 6, 2009. She was born on July 1, 1931 to the late Elder James Gatlin, Sr. and the late Alverta Mae Gatlin. Born and raised in Virginia Beach, VA, Geraldine was educated on the Virginia Beach School Public School System and attended Norfolk State University. She found her niche in several different career paths including, Hairdresser, School Bus Driver, Private Health Care, Substitute Teacher, and a supervisor for the Southeastern Virginia Food Bank. Geraldine was a charter member of New Hope Church of God In Christ, which was founder by her brother, the late Elder James Gatlin, Jr., in the 1970s. After his death, Deacon Frank L. Smith, Sr. was appointed pastor by the last Bishop David C. love and Geraldine step into her role as the First Lady. Active in her local church, Geraldine was just as active in her district and Jurisdiction as well. She held many offices during her life and was faithful to the ministry. Among many commendations and awards on November 24, 2009 she was awarded the Coretta Scott King Award of Excellence.In her memory she leaves a husband, Elder Frank L. Smith, Sr.; five birth children, Gwendolyn Bell; Sharon Felton (Winfred, Sr.); Elvis Smith, Sr. (Marietta Denise); Darlene Echols (Pastor Dennis); and Carlton M. Smith; 2 foster daughters Theresa Rivers (Dennis) and Rachel Franklin (Vernon); a foster son Carlton Barnes; seventeen grandchildren, thirteen great grand children; many god children, one sister, Gladys Wilson (George Sr.); Bishop Clarence Gatlin (Mollie), Leon Gatlin (Curlie Mae), Craig Speller (Sabrina), Elwood Gatlin (Chelsea), Jasper Gatlin, Jeremy Gatlin (Sharlene), Dishell Cafee (Catreece); and one foster sister, Gladys Holsey (James, Sr.); one aunt, Margaret Gregory; 2 uncles, James Shaw; Herbert Gatlin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones. She is predeceased by her parents, James and Alverta Gatlin, her brother Elder James Gatlin, Jr. (Thelma), and her son Frank L. Smith, Jr.District Missionary Geraldine Elizabeth Gatlin Smith District Missionary Geraldine Smiths labor in the vineyard began when God saved her at the tender age of 8 years old. That very night in addition to gaining salvation, she was filled with the Holy Ghost. Thus begin the very purpose of her life, driven by her passion and opportunity to be a Tool for the Lord. Throughout the years, District Missionary Smith worked in the ministry along side her father, the late Elder James Gatlin, Sr. From St. Stephens COGIC under the leadership of Elder Jerome Spence, to St. Paul COGIC where her father served as pastor, she was an inspiration to the church at a very young age. Along with the gifts of salvation and the Holy Ghost, God endowed her with a voice so filled with the anointing; all it took was one song from her to set the church on fire. Designated as the official State Soloist, by the late Bishop David C. Love, District Missionary Smith would walk to the front of the church in her tattered and torn clothing, while people were pointing and mocking her. Feeling intimidated in her natural spirit, she would pray a silent prayer to God, pleading with him to make himself glorified in her song. They would stand her up on the table and from there the Lord would place his hand on her vocal chords. Out of her mouth flowed the longings of the soul that tugged at the heart of the church and sent a spirit of deliverance in the room. It got to the point where if during convocation if Bishop Love wanted to hold the people till the end of service, he would announce that after he preached, Geraldine Gatlin was going to sing. It was once even told that people were loading up to go home on the bus one convocation and Bishop Love put Geraldine up to sing. They came back in the church in doves to hear this anointed little girl bring the house down. Yes, in her heart flowed a continuous melody of love divine. The singing voice of Geraldine preceeded her throughout the state and the nation. People heard of this voice that destroyed yolks. Geraldine received offers from many legends in gospel music to come and sing with them. From the Dixie Humming Birds to Mahalia Jackson, the anointing that God had bestowed on Geraldine's voice was wanted by all. She sang and preached on Mark Richardson's radio show, performed with the Dixie Hummingbirds and even asked to join the legendary gospel group, the Caravans. Although singing was in her heart, Geraldine knew that it was not God's ultimate call for her life. She began her work in the church at an early age. At 15 she was appointed president of The Young Womens Christian Council (YWCC) and held this office for 11 years, nurtured and influenced by her aunt, the late Dr. Mary Featherston (State Supervisor of the 3rd Jurisdiction of Virginia). She ran her first revival at age 21 for Elder James Williams. It was there she made her mark as a sanctified evangelist. Churches all across America called for the young missionary who not only brought the message at the revival, she sang, prayed for the sick, and allowed God to use her as a prophetess. She traveled many places throughout the nation to conduct revivals, including California on more than one occasion, to conduct revivals for Bishop Blake, Sr. She also traveled across seas to conduct revivals at places such as Bermuda. In the Hampton Roads area, she became the first radio missionary under the leadership of Elder Harvey Dunlap. Out of her ministry was birth many churches, bishops, pastors, evangelists, preachers, and missionaries. Many lives were forever, eternally changed from listening to the word of God delivered by District Missionary Geraldine Gatlin Smith in song or through preaching. With the responsibility that God place on her, also came the attack of the adversary. True to his word, he sought out to kill, steal and destroy the ministry that God appointed to District Missionary Smith. From being shot at in a tent revival, to being slapped in the face while proclaiming Christ, the devil truly wanted to wipe her out, but God said it wasn't her time. Even when she suffered from the death of a child, six massive strokes, heart failure, kidney failure, diabetes, arthritis, and high blood pressure, the task that God placed on her life was not hindered by any of these aliments. She used them to her benefit. Many songs and messages were inspired by the different trials that she went through. Put Yes In My Soul, Jesus Christ Touched, The Goodness of God Is Great, and many more were all written by Geraldine at times when it seemed that life's situations would overtake her, but God brought her through and gave her a song to tell the story. In the Historic First Jurisdiction of Virginia, Evangelist Smith served as a District Missionary for more than 30 years in throughout various districts including, the Skyline District, Shenandoah District, and most recently, the South Norfolk District. For more than 50 years, she served as Big Sister Sunshine, president of the Sunshine Band. She was the YPWW Chairlady for more than 30 years and later became the State YPWW Chaplain. She also served on the State Womens Department Executive Finance Committee. She was very supportive of her husband in his role of State Evangelist. As he was mandated by God to go out and help, she was right by his side preaching, teaching, singing and sharing the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For 34 years she served as the First Lady of New Hope Church of God In Christ, a church that she help start long side her brother and then pastor, the later Elder James Gatlin, Jr. and her husband, Elder Frank L. Smith, Sr., the current pastor of New Hope COGIC. As president of the Womens Department at New Hope COGIC, she led the most recent capital campaign, which led to the purchase of a new property for the church. Many people can attest to the fact that District Missionary Smith, affectionately known as Mama Geraldine to many, was a true lover of people. It was her life's goal to draw others to Christ and she would do that by the power and anointing of the Holy Ghost. From housing people in her own home, to feeding, clothing and providing monetary assistance, Geraldine was a giver and a lover of people. A great woman of God, renowned throughout the world, she will be greatly missed. But her legacy will live on through the various ministries that were birth through her ministry. Her works will "praise her in the gates".We will always remember Her laugh. Her Smile. Her Voice. Her kindness. Her Commitment. Her Tenacity. Her Strength. Her Wisdom. Her Loyalty. Her Compassion. Her Spirit. We will always remember her.
